Eko Yuli Irawan Loses to Injuries in Weightlifting Legend Showdown

Apology to the Nation

Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia expressed deep disappointment on Wednesday when he failed to secure a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic weightlifting competition at South Paris Arena. He said injuries limited his performance and led him down a disappointing path.

Irawan apologised to Indonesia through the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) for failing to reach his podium finish.

“I apologize to all Indonesian people for not winning a medal; however, I gave my all to succeed at every opportunity,” said Hasanuddin.

Battle Through Injuries

Hampered by an ongoing knee issue and recent thigh pain, Irawan admitted competing below peak physical condition. Even with assurances from the team doctor that her injuries weren’t too severe, his performance was undoubtedly affected.

“Since last year, I have had knee and right thigh issues that are hindering me.” he shared.

The Snatch, Clean, and Jerk Challenges

Irawan failed his initial attempt at 135kg but succeeded on his second. Unfortunately, his third attempt of 139kg proved fruitless. Meanwhile, all three attempts he made at clean and jerking had a maximum weight of 165kg each time, and upon failing his last attempt, he fell on his right thigh and grabbed onto it in disgrace.

Indonesian team doctor Andhika Raspati confirmed that Irawan’s right thigh injury was not serious and could still walk, though with difficulty post-competition.

“Eko reported having an issue with his right thigh for about one month. We offered to transport him by ambulance; he declined; it appears his condition is not life-threatening as he can still walk,” according to his doctor.

Recognizing an Outstanding Career

Anindya Bakrie, Indonesia’s Chief Delegation to the Olympics, applauded Irawan’s dedication and celebrated his four Olympic medals across five Games: bronze at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics, silver in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and two more silvers at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Li Fabin of China lifted 310kg to win gold, while Thailand’s Theerapong Silachai successfully defended his 303kg total lift against US lifter Morris Hampton’s last attempt for silver.
